Blessed Is She Who Believed

Every year in December I read the Christmas story from Luke’s gospel. It’s a very familiar story – most of the words have been committed to memory since I was a little girl. Still, every year I expect to find something new in the story that touches my heart. God’s Word is always fresh – and coming of the Messiah is the best part of any story from the beginning of time.

Before Jesus was born, Mary’s cousin Elizabeth experienced her own miracle. Barren until her old age, she bore the prophet John who would prepare the way for Jesus. Chapter 1 of Luke says,

³⁹ In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, ⁴⁰ and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.⁴¹ And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, ⁴² and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! ⁴³ And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

The last verse in that paragraph is what spoke to my heart this time.

Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

Proverbs 31:12 has been on my heart for the past several months – “she does [her husband] good, and not harm, all the days of her life.” I’ve really tried to be a wife that does things in my husband’s best interest – supplementing our finances by working outside the home, keeping his clothes clean for work, making sure there are plenty of snacks in the kitchen, those type of wifely duties.

One of the best ways I can do my husband good and not harm is to believe the promises of God.

God has promised that:
He is in control.
He is faithful.
He will provide.
He will give grace.
He will answer prayer.
He will guide our steps when we trust Him.

How blessed will not only I be, but how blessed will our home be if I believe that there will be a fulfillment of what has been spoken to me from the Lord?

Whatever situation you find yourself in on this Christmas Eve, I challenge you to believe that God will fulfill His promise to you. He used a young virgin teenage girl to bring the promised Messiah into the world. What does He want to do through you?
