How To Organize Ties

This organizing project should be credited to my husband. He asked if I could put his ties in categories, so that he knows which tie matches each suit in his closet. Paul’s not incompetent when it comes to dressing himself – but he is color deficient. That proves to be a little challenging when many of his ties are similar colors! Here’s what I came up with:

I used these shallow Rubbermaid containers to sort the four categories of his ties. Paul has suits in three different colors, so there’s a box for each color of suit plus an overflow box that I’m calling the “discretionary box.” That’s the box you see on the left above, and it has ties that match various outfits at my discretion. 🙂 Of course, some of the ties in one box might actually match other colors as well, but this system gives him plenty of options for each color. These boxes live on a shelf in his closet and are easily accessible.

How lucky am I to have a husband who asks to have his stuff organized? 🙂

  1. I had to chuckle just a little at this — my husband has one suit (black) — that he rarely wears — and about 50 ties. Oh well.

  2. I matched all of my hubby’s shirts and ties by lettering the shirt on the tag & using multi-pack bib hangers labeled with the letters if the matching shirt right on the hanger to hold the ties. As long as he puts it back where it came from, they’re always matched for him. 🙂

  3. I love the idea!! I wish my husband wore suits more often. He usually struggles with matching all of his varied patterned blue dress shirts with a tie. I usually get a “does this tie match this tiny stripe in my shirt?” question every morning 🙂

  4. This is adorable!! I love that he requested help with this project. Kevin’s are just hanging on a tie rack and we usually select his ties together since his matching skills are a little questionable 🙂
