3 Reasons Why We Need To Practice Self Care {Guest Post}

Last week I wrote about finding fulfillment in your role as a wife. I know that so many of my sweet readers are wives as well as moms – and I want to encourage you in that role as well! I invited my sweet friend Keri to share one of the ways she has learned to thrive as a mom. I know it will encourage you!

Whether you are a mom or not, self- care can be a struggle for women. By nature, we tend to put everyone else in front of ourselves. We pour and pour into others- friends, spouse, children- and often are running around with an empty cup. Our souls are weary and drained and we wonder why we are barely surviving. Friends, we have to start taking care of ourselves. Whenever I think of self-care, I think of three reasons of why I need to be practicing this.

Self-Care-Pin

(1) You are created by God. I take great care of the art projects that my children bring home. They are displayed on our art wall or the fridge proudly. No one trashes them or picks them apart. No matter what the art project may be, we rejoice over a beautiful creation. In the same way, we are God’s creation. He formed us uniquely and each with different skills and gifts. We need to start taking care of ourselves, because we are a beautiful created being.

(2) You can only care for others, when you care for yourself. Earlier, I mentioned how we are running around on empty. Have you ever tried to pour something out of an empty cup? Nothing happens. When a pitcher runs out of water, we fill it back up with water. It would be silly for us to continue to pour from that pitcher. So why do we try to pour out when we are empty? I think that many times we believe the lies about self-care: we don’t have time, it is selfish, etc. However, we have to let go of these lies and know that we do have time and it is not selfish to take care of yourself.

(3) You are an example to those around you. If you are a mom, your kids are watching you and learning from your actions daily. They see everything, even the things we do not want them to see. If you are not a mom, think about the people you come into contact in your life. Your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors- wouldn’t it be amazing to be living a life that shows others what it means to take care of yourself?

Learning how to practice Self-Care

Self-care does not have to be anything grand. I think of it in three parts: spiritual, physical, and social/emotional. It all boils down to whether or not you are taking the time to fill back up. Will you start filling your cup back up with me?

Keri has recently released her book, Why Just Survive When You Can Thrive. It is currently available here. She shares more about self-care and so many other practical tips for thriving as a mom.

  1. Self care is so important. If you don’t take care of yourself, there’s no guarantee that someone else will!

  2. I read Keri’s book last year. I do truly believe its very hard to take care of others when you’re running on empty. I always try to get some sleep and I treat myself to some quiet time as often as I can!

  3. Yes, totally! I’m learning this more and more. If it’s a simple pedicure or my weekly yoga class, I’m working on making time for me!
