My Favorite Verses For The Hard Times

Trials, hard times and suffering are inevitable, but we don’t have to go through them without hope or help. Our pastor reminded us recently of the importance of knowing the promises of God’s Word. I wrote this down in my journal a few Sundays ago:

Knowing God’s Word not only helps us get through the dark times in life, it prepares us for them.

I shared last year how the promise of Proverbs 30:5 was helpful to me in a rough day at work, but what about those days that are really dark? I have several friends who have recently lost family members unexpectedly or who have received a grim cancer diagnosis for their young child. In times like that when you can’t think clearly enough to put a sentence together, the Holy Spirit will remind you of the promises you’ve hidden in your heart.

Here are my favorite verses for the hard times:

Psalm 91:1-2 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Romans 5:8 God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Isaiah 43:1-3 But now thus says the Lordhe who created you, O Jacob,he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

2 Chronicles 20:15-17 Thus says the Lord to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s…You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed.

  1. I love the verse from Isaiah and the one from 2 Chronicles. I’ll have to save this post to refer back to. I always love the verse from Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. My parents wrote that to me when I graduated high school and it’s been a comfort ever since.

  2. Hard times in life often leave us scratching our heads. I like the verse from Exodus 14:14 that says: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” It’s comforting to know that God has our backs, no matter what happens. We just need to keep living our lives and honoring Him.

  4. My favorite verse, and my go-to for everything…Psalm 46:10. Be still, and know that I am God. Those words just speak to me in so many ways. They stop me fast and remind me to calm down, take a breath, and know that I am never alone. I also know that He already knows how it all works out. I just have to surrender and allow Him to guide me thru to the other side that He has already prepared.

  5. Ah, such words of comfort. I also go to Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  6. Psalm 73 25, 26 Whom have I in heaven but Thee? There is none upon Earth that I desire beside Thee. My Flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

This verse reminds me that God is always enough for me, as my portion! When I go through trials he strengthens my ❤ and my flesh.

Thanks for this good encouragement, Whitney.
