Having all your jewelry organized can make a huge difference in your daily routine. I have two goals when organizing my jewelry: I want my system to be functional, but I also want it to be pretty. A functional system helps me find what I need quickly, and a pretty system allows me to enjoy my pieces even when I’m not wearing them. Here’s how to accomplish those goals for yourself!
1. Declutter
Jewelry needs to be purged just as much as your closet and your tupperware drawer! Before you set up your organizational system, go through your collection and get rid of anything that is broken, tarnished or that simply doesn’t suit your tastes any more. Jewelry that is in good condition can be donated and enjoyed by someone else!
2. Sort
I have my jewelry sorted into two categories:
- Things I wear on a daily basis
- Things that are sentimental, expensive or worn occasionally
For me, it serves the same purpose as only having summer clothes in your closet during the summer months. There’s no need to dig through your expensive, super fancy jewelry every day as you look for something to go with your work outfit. I don’t have any expensive jewelry, but bracelets are something I rarely wear. I only wear them if we’re going out for dinner or something like that. Those go in the “worn occasionally” section, except for a few pretty ones that I leave out on my dresser for looks. 🙂
3. Set up your system
Here are the pieces in my system:
- Earring display organizer (my Papa made mine – you might find a similar style on Etsy)
- Standing necklace tree from TJ Maxx
- Tray with two containers for post earrings, rings and bracelets
- Decorative box (stored under my night stand) for sentimental and occasional use jewelry
If I had a walk-in closet, that would be my first choice for displaying jewelry – it’s good to keep it out of sunlight. I also wouldn’t want it in my bathroom where it would be showered with hair products. 🙂
How do you store your jewelry? Do you need to sort through your pieces and get rid of things you’re not wearing? I purged my earrings just before writing this post and I’m so glad I did!
Great ideas, friend! This is one area of decluttering that I’ve been focusing on lately, along with clothes. I need to make time to upload items I no longer want to Poshmark. . .

I have the hardest time parting with jewelry, but then once it’s gone I never miss it!

High five on organizing everything so beautifully! 🙂 Unlike you, I love bracelets and have a big collection. The easiest way to organize them has been to display them in white ceramic baskets on my dresser. I find that I will wear pieces more often if I can see them sitting there. It’s sad to have things that don’t feel loved because they’re hidden away.

That’s a great system! Glad you are able to enjoy your bracelets. 🙂

Your display on the dresser is SO pretty! This proves that functional can also be beautiful. I don’t wear bracelets very often either. If I do wear them, I usually end up taking them off half way through the day.

Exactly! I start out with the bracelets and then decide they’re too hot or noisy or just annoying. 🙂

Beautiful! I recently moved and cleaned out my jewelry and organized it as well. Getting rid of earrings that were missing their mate (how does that happen?!) or things that aren’t my style any longer helped. Your blog and YouTube channel are so inspiring Whitney. I actually started my own blog to feel a little less lonely as someone who loves being home as well! I’ve learned a lot from your channel/blog. Even trying products you use 🙂 Have a great week!

Cari, thank you for your sweet words!! I am so glad to encourage you and to share our passion for being homemakers! As for the one lone earring issue…I have no idea where those guys get lost! I had several like that when I purged. 🙂

Such a pretty display! I keep all of my jewelry in hard canvas divider trays from Target. They are in the top drawer of my dresser and are divided by necklaces, dangly earrings, and bracelets. My post earrings are all in a tiny Caboodle that is only about 4×1 inches. I also have room in this drawer to keep my nail polish, nail kit, and sunglasses!

My accessories are still in boxes so I can’t wait to organize them! I definitely need to purge, take advantage of hanging options and organize based on how often they are worn. I rarely ware bracelets these days so i think I’ll put those out of sight and focus on earrings and necklaces I know i’ll wear. I’m hoping to hang my scarves in my closet. Love your pretty organizers and your tips!!

Whitney, where did you find that beautiful, light turquoise glass container (with lid) that you have your post earrings in? I LOVE it. I admire your nicely organized jewelry. Great job!

Oh Rebekah, that was my Gramma Cunningham’s jewelry box! I have no idea where she got it or how old it is, but I love it too!

I try so hard to keep mine organized but it isn’t my most successful resolution! I have a similar set up to yours but I often just lay it all out on my dresser. Oops!

I am so glad I paired down my earrings this weekend – it makes it so much easier to find a pair I want when I’m not wading through dozens of pairs I never wear.

Perfect Timing, jewelry is up next on my declutter list. 🙂 (though I did have a charming charlie order coming with a few new pieces!) I’m finding that I wear basic pieces most days so I wanted some new basics to change things up a bit. Can’t go wrong with classics!

Yeah, I’ve gone away from so much of the colored jewelry and find I prefer gold or silver pieces these days.

I have a jewelry armoire that I have had for years. I had very little jewelry and nothing expensive, except my wedding rings. But in the last two years, I have started wearing more jewelry. I have found it is an inexpensive way to perk up an old outfit. I have purchased jewelry at Walmart, Cracker Barrel Clearance aisles and in some higher end stores. Now I have it all organized and I only purchase pieces that I know I will use.

An armoire is a great way to store jewelry, especially to keep it away from dust and light. I’m sure yours is nice and tidy!
