Menu Monday {and changing my grocery store relationship status to “it’s complicated”}

Menu Monday August

I finally got some good South Carolina peaches! My favorite place to get them is halfway between here and Asheville, NC. I finally headed that way on Saturday and made a point to stop and pick up a load of peaches on the way home. For some reason I’ve had bad luck with produce this summer and have been disappointed with so many things I’ve purchased. So far these peaches have been delicious – thank goodness!

This has been a rough summer on the grocery store front. My go-to grocery store did a huge remodel and changed the checkout process – I hate it. Their prices haven’t been as amazing as I’d like, and I’m thinking about breaking up with Ingles. We’re getting a Lowes Foods pretty soon, so I’m going to try that one a couple times. Do any of you have experience shopping at Lowes Foods? I know they double coupons up to $.99 and accept competitors coupons which is exciting!

I shopped at Aldi for this week’s groceries. Feeling adventurous, I picked up a few new items! Here’s my haul and what’s on the menu for the week!

  1. Hooray for good peaches! 🙂 It’s been slim pickings around here, as I kept getting mushy (and just plain weird) peaches. Finally, the last bunch from Hy-Vee was awesome! Years ago, my family got some softball-sized Georgia peaches in Georgia while on vacation, and we still dream about them. Some areas just seem to know how to grow them just right.

    That stinks about Ingles! 😦 What happened to the checkout system? It’s so hard to have to switch stores when you get used to one. Our Baker’s (Kroger) remodeled about a year ago, and the aisles are now a lot smaller. It’s a bit of a struggle to get around with people almost on top of you, but the deals and produce are about the same as always. Hy-Vee’s prices went up after the remodeled, though. Stinkers!

    1. With the old checkout system, you pushed your cart right up to the counter and the cashier unloaded the groceries as she rang them up – there was no conveyor belt. Now you have to unload your things onto the conveyor belt – so I can’t read the screen as items are being scanned. I don’t like that. Also they put in new credit card machines that are at least 4 feet, 7 inches high…I’m 4’10” and it’s nearly impossible to read the little screen that way! Super annoying. And they’ve raised their prices. So I’m about done with Ingles!

      1. Yeah, it’s almost impossible to keep an eye on the ringing up while loading the belt. You need to get Paul to help load. 😉 That is so weird that the card machines are so low. Did they get new chip card readers? Some stores are putting in machines here that only take the chip cards. Not sure that ours are a lot lower height-wise, but maybe it’s for security reasons (people peeking at pin numbers)? Hopefully, your new food store will be amazing! We have a Lowe’s here, but it’s a hardware/home improvement store! 🙂

  2. Yum! We are enjoying blueberry muffins right now. I have a Southern confession… I’ve NEVER eaten Pimento cheese! I love cheese so I’m not sure how I’ve missed out, but I probably need to give it a try ASAP. Your menu has a ton of variety in it this week and now I’m dreaming of crab cakes 🙂

  3. I hate to hear that about your grocery store. I’m all for change when it’s for the better, but yours sounds like it’s went downhill. I wonder if they’ll lose other loyal customers and whether that eill cause them to rethink their current strategy.

  4. We loved our Carolina peaches this week. Thanks to my friend, Susan, who visited her hometown of Shelby NC. They are the very best peaches!! I have never heard of Lowes Groceries…is that a Carolina chain?

  5. I always love to read these menu posts. I feel like I get stuck in such a huge rut then I go to Pinterest for help and end up getting overwhelmed. Seeing what others are eating is a good change of pace for me. Thanks for sharing :).
