The Daily Practice That Has Changed My Life

Have you noticed that the book of Proverbs has 31 chapters? Although the way our Bibles are broken up into chapters and verses isn’t divinely inspired, I believe there’s a reason for the number of chapters in Proverbs – there’s one for every day of the month! For the past five years or so I’ve made it my daily practice to read a chapter of Proverbs each day, of course reading the chapter that corresponds to the day of the month.

It has changed my life!

The book of Proverbs was written to give wisdom and instruction (Prov. 1:2), and the area of my life where I most need that help is interacting and dealing with people. As I’ve saturated my heart and mind with the wisdom of Proverbs, it has dramatically impacted the way I respond to others. That’s not to say I have it mastered or that I’m the perfect example of how to respond to difficult situations, but my responses are filled with so much more wisdom and grace than I naturally have on my own.

There have been many times that the recollection of a particular verse has stopped me in my tracks right before I said something I shouldn’t have, reminding me that sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. It has convicted me of the damage done when I gossip – a whisperer separates close friends.

It helps me to be forbearing and full of grace in my marriage when I remember that whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. It has stopped me from airing all the work day’s grievances to my husband because it is better to live in a corner of a housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

Here’s how I incorporate Proverbs into my daily life. Each morning when I’m getting ready or making the bed, I listen to the Proverb for the day on my YouVersion app. I love that you can choose whatever version you wish and that it reads the chapters out loud. If you only use the app for listening to Proverbs, it will keep your place and you can pick up where you left off each day.

My word of the year is grow – and I’m working on growing in my knowledge of Proverbs by trying to quote the second half of the verse along with the narrator. It keeps me engaged and helps the Proverb to stick in my head.

If you have never spent time really listening to or studying Proverbs, I hope you’ll give it a try! You could use the audible version in many situations – during breakfast each day, in the car on the way to work or school (wouldn’t it be great for your kids to soak up as well?!), or as part of your evening routine. God’s Word is profitable and so impactful in our daily lives!

Have you used the Proverb-a-day practice? I would love to hear how it has changed your life!

  2. Jason and I do this too, but I’ve never thought of listening to it audibly with my Bible app. I love this idea! You just changed my mornings, sweet friend! 😉 I think I’ll begin playing it while making the bed, etc.. Thanks so much for sharing this tip! I love that hiding God’s Word in our hearts impacts our lives immeasurably! I will admit that there was once this week that “It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife” came to my mind (during a less than fine, exhausted, and overwhelmed moment) it humbled me instantly, drew my heart to repentance, and shifted my attitude and focus completely! Praise God that He brings His Word to our remembrance, draws us to repentance when needed, and that He continually uses it to guide and grow us! Thank you for sharing this post! xo!

  4. What a simple, yet meaningful, start to your day. I’ve never done this (you version, listen to scripture reading in the morning or read Proverbs 31 over and over). Thanks for the idea. Knowing how much you’ve enjoyed it makes it extra motivating to try.

  5. I love this post, Whitney! I have also been reading the Proverbs of the day, thanks to your Mom who passed along the idea. It has been a life changer for me as well and now I’m encouraging Noah to do it. This will also be a part of our daily routine in my classes at Cedar View coming up this year 😊
