Simple Daily Routines: A Great Place To Start Your Year!

Life can be so busy, can’t it? We all have varied situations, but it can be so easy to feel as if you’re just surviving from one day (or weekend) to the next. If you’re looking at the new year and desiring for this to be the year that you take your life back, there’s a very simple place to start.

There’s so much talk about setting goals – but if you’re already overwhelmed with your daily life, adding one more thing to the list might seem insane! For me, goals are not simply items on a to-do list. Yearly goals are things that I incorporate to make my life easier, better or more efficient.

Doesn’t that sound like something that would benefit everyone? Here’s where to start – implement a simple daily routine. If you don’t currently have a morning or an evening routine, I recommend that you start with an evening routine. It sets you up for a successful morning!

Take a few minutes and think through a typical morning at your house. What is the thing that you dread the most? What is the task that seems to throw a wrench in the works? Once you’ve decided on a singular thing, think of a way to move that item to the end of the day. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Making everyone’s lunches? Assemble them when you’re cleaning up from supper.
  • Someone can’t ever find their shoes/keys/phone/paperwork? Set it by the door or give it an assigned spot for the night.
  • Coming downstairs to a messy kitchen? Start the dishwasher after supper and empty it before bed.
  • Walking into an office with so much to do that you don’t know where to start? Before you leave the office, sort the papers on your desk into piles. Make a to-do list on a clean sheet of paper with your top 3 priorities for the next day.
  • Constantly running late because you can’t find a cute outfit to wear? Before you go to bed, check the weather forecast, choose an outfit and lay out all the accessories that go with it.

Here’s my challenge to you – pick one action that you will move to the end of the day, and commit to follow through on that routine for 14 days. See if it makes a difference in your morning!

You just might find that routine breeds routine. Once you’ve built that first action into your evening routine, you may very well find yourself adding other tasks – and continually reducing the stress, chaos and overwhelm that once controlled your life!

I would love for you to leave a comment and let me know what your evening routine item will be! If you don’t know how to solve your morning issue, leave a comment or email me and I’ll try to come up with a solution for you.

  1. I’m always looking for ways to improve my morning and evening routine. Here are a few things I’m working on in the new year: decide on a wake up time and a bed time for week days and stick to it, spending quality time with my husband after the kids go to bed and taking time every week to stock the fridge with healthy food options (shopping, chopping veggies and making it easy for my family to make healthy food choices).

  2. Picking/planning out the next day’s outfit and lunch the night before is a MUST. My brain just can’t function that way at 5:30 a.m. 😄

  3. Excellent advice…even though sometimes I’m exhausted by the time dinner is over, I am going to force myself to clean up the kitchen and run the dishwasher. It is lovely coming out to a clean kitchen in the morning. This will be my New Years to do!!!

    1. Me too, Linda! Almost every night I have to talk myself into putting away the clean dishes or setting things out for the next day. I try to remember that I NEVER regret doing things ahead, but I usually regret NOT doing them. You can do it! 🙂

  4. Very solid advice Whitney. I always got out my children’s clothes for school the night before, packed lunches and put all homework etc in backpacks. ( Or helped them do it.) My Daughter in law says Ben still gets his clothes out the night before.lol My training paid off.
