I had such a Monday at the beginning of this week. My strawberry pecan bread stuck in the pan and made a huge mess, the “clean” light on my coffee maker would not go off even though I ran the clean & rinse cycles repeatedly, and I found myself in an argument with the plumber. Yep, standing right there at the kitchen sink, I argued with the plumber! It was quite the day.
None of those things are actually big deals, but they came after a string of much bigger life circumstances that were frustrating, disappointing and most definitely out of my control. My frustration at not being able to control the outcome of my bread just revealed the ugliness of my heart and the weariness of my soul.
I’m sure you know the feeling I’m describing – the weariness of dealing with disappointment and frustration that causes you to say, “What now? I can’t deal with this on top of everything else.”
As I got ready for the day on Tuesday, still feeling worn out and over it from the big life stuff – and dreading the return of the lazy plumber to hopefully do the job correctly this time – the Holy Spirit reminded me of the Scripture I read on Monday:
We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,
for our hope is in you alone. (Psalm 33: 20-22)
That truth doesn’t change the circumstances, but it definitely changes my perspective and gives me the “oomph” I need to face the day!
I heard someone say this and the truth sank deep into my heart: “The world wearies us, but God’s Word revives us.” If your heart is weary today, run to God’s Word. It’s better than sunshine on a cold March day!
If you’re struggling, as I did, with frustration and disappointment, take a minute to fill in the blanks with the honest truth from your heart.
I put my hope in ______________.
In ___________ my heart rejoices.
If your truthful answer to those is anything other than God, you’re not alone. I struggle with placing my hope and looking for joy in circumstances, people and things. Pray this passage back to the Lord and ask Him to surround you with His unfailing love. He never disappoints!
And while you’re at it, pray for my plumber. Nobody messes up my kitchen sink and gets away with it. 🙂

Your words today have come to me hard….I know this exact feeling now so well. There are times I don’t feel good about how I am feeling with myself or anyone around me. This has been so strong lately. Life is overwhelming and I pray to settle the heart and renew a fresh spirit within. And….a sink situation is not fun in the daily things of life! May your plumber see your situation and just fix it!

Oh my…I hope the rest of the week is better for you Whitney. I have been there and I am sure I will be there again one day. Our lives are full of ups and downs. But we do need to take your advice and look to the Lord for His Help.
