Our Spring and Summer Home Updates {2020}

Being a grateful person has been a lifelong pursuit of mine. I think that part of being a grateful person is taking the time to look back and find the blessings. This week I made a list of all the projects we completed during the Spring, when Paul would normally be very busy with sports. Having him home every evening proved to be very productive!

We bought our house in November of 2012. Some of these projects needed to be done back then – but that wasn’t possible. I appreciate the little changes even more now!

#1 New mailbox installed – I think the previous one was original to the house. It was definitely showing its rusty 50+ years! We just bought the least expensive metal mailbox at Lowes, and Paul installed it.

#2 Front landscaping cleaned out and new mulch added – We worked on this project together over the span of two days. We raked out the old mulch from 5 years ago, cleaned out the weeds and laid down new mulch. Paul was really surprised that I volunteered to help (I’m indoorsy) but it really made the job go faster with both of us working.

#3 Deck Stained – Last summer we replaced the deck, but never got around to staining it. This was another job we did together! To apply the stain we used a regular paint brush, a small roller and a large roller/sponge on a stick. It’s not the prettiest job up close, but it will do just fine for now.

#4 Porch light replaced and motion detector light installed – Paul had a friend help him with this one. It involved running wire, so he learned some new tricks in the process!

#5 Window trim, shutters and doors painted – I’m so glad we did the deck first, because that made us realize the need to hire a professional for the front of the house. 🙂 You can see all the details on this project on my detailed before and after post!

My home might be “nicer” than yours. Your home might be a lot “nicer,” larger or newer than mine! Whatever the case, here’s the secret to being content with the home you have right now: Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 6:9

When we realize that everything we have is a gift from God, it changes things. As Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, wrote: Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him? ‭‭Ecclesiastes ‭2:24-25

  1. Your home looks beautiful!! All those projects really add up to lots of pretty updates. We need to remulch all of our landscaping again this Summer. It’s nice to have friends that can help with projects to save money and teach you something along the way.
