Every so often someone will comment on a picture, blog post or video and say, “I wish you could organize my house for me!” I know what they mean, and I’m flattered by the compliment. However, the reason my house is organized is not because I live here. I don’t possess any magical organizing Pixie Dust – I’m actually not a tidy person by nature. There have been many times throughout my 32 years when I’ve allowed my living space to become very messy and cluttered.
So what is the secret to the organized bliss* in which I live? Discipline.
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. – Proverbs 25:28
Over the last few years I have learned how to organize my home by copying things I’ve seen on Pretty Neat Living, Org Junkie and others around the internet. Setting up those systems takes hard work and discipline even in the initial stages as I work through the clutter, make decisions and finish the job.
Without the discipline to maintain those organization systems (put things away), my home would quickly become a huge mess! I have to make the choice every day to say no to laziness and yes to discipline. Just as laziness has consequences, discipline has great rewards.
*My home is far from perfect. Every day I have to make this choice – sometimes I make the right choice, sometimes I don’t! I am, however, far enough along in my experience to know the cause of my messy home (me).
What will you choose today? Laziness or discipline?
Organization takes dedication, that’s for sure. When things get crazy around here, it’s a challenge to keep things in place. But you can’t give in. Just pick up (haha!) and get back on the wagon. 🙂 Having limited space and way too much stuff is another struggle. I’m getting there, though. Thanks for the encouragement!

Love this Whitney! It’s so true and I catch myself sometimes wanting to just toss something on the closet floor and then the little voice in the back of my head has to remind me not to be lazy.
