New Master Bedroom Decor: A Calm Place To Relax

“Even miracles take a little time.” -Fairy Godmother, Cinderella

I feel like it’s a miracle that my master bedroom is finally decorated! This project has been a long time coming, and I’m so excited that it’s finally done.

As I always do, I found a couple inspiration photos to guide my choices as I shopped for furniture and accessories. The first was a page in Southern Living magazine.

The second inspirational photo came from Instagram. I try to discern what it is I like about these rooms and let that guide me as I decorate: things like the colors, the matching night stands and lamps, and the grouping of three simple frames over the bed.

Confession: it’s a challenge to let the photos guide me while keeping myself from being frustrated that my room doesn’t look exactly like the photo. I have to constantly remind myself that I’m doing the best with what I have.

I feel like I was able to capture the essence of my inspiration photos and transfer that to my room. Yay!

Another area where I had to choose contentment was the carpet. It desperately needed to be replaced, but that wasn’t in my budget. Instead I found an area rug that covers most of the surface area. It also serves to add more color and warmth to the room.

My dark blue throw pillows look a little darker in the photo, but they’re actually the same shade as the deep color in the rug.

I smile every time I walk in this room!

I didn’t just think about how I wanted the room to look – I also kept in mind how I wanted the room to function. Since this is our master bedroom, I wanted it to be another place in house where we could relax.

There’s not room for a sitting area or even a small chair, so the bed has to be the place we sit while we read or watch TV. Thelma Lou agrees that it’s perfect! (I’m not sure why that Olay commercial was so interesting to her. Ha!)

At the end of the post I have all the links and product details. Before we get to that, I want to show you some before and after photos of this room.

The wall color and the weird position of the shallow windows only accentuated the mishmash of furniture and decor I was able to squeeze in this room.

This is the best it looked over the course of 13 years. I had this gallery wall over the bed, but we didn’t have a headboard. I never took any pictures of the whole room – who wants to remember a room that you think looks terrible? 🙂

I started slowly working on this project, adding pieces as we could afford them. Over the winter I got a new bed frame and headboard, then a set of matching night stands. I watched for the rug to go on sale and purchased it this spring.

Slowly, the room came together. In August I finally had a chance to repaint, and that made the biggest difference. Painting a room by yourself is hard work!

It cost me around $200 in supplies and at least 3 full days of hard work, but painting is always worth it. Look at the difference!

If you have a room that you hate, I hope this post will encourage you. Do the best with what you have. Find an inspiration photo and slowly begin collecting the things you need to make your room dreams come true!

Choosing contentment as we work in our homes points our hearts toward the Giver of all good gifts. Everything we have is made possible because of Jesus – and He is always enough!

“In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4

  4. The room is lovely! You always do a great job in finding nice things at affordable prices and waiting for sales. I would love new family room couches, but it’s not a priority right now. Instead I bought new lamp shades and am waiting for Black Friday sales for throws and pillows.

    1. Thank you! Good for you – do what you can with the means you have available. Hope you got some great deals! If you haven’t found any pillows yet, At Home has the best prices on those that I’ve seen.
