Binge These Classic Movies During The Holidays!

Looking for something different to watch this weekend? Here are eleven of my favorite classic movies, with something for everyone! Click the title of each movie to read my full review, if you’re unfamiliar with any of the films I’ve listed. Which one is your favorite?

CHRISTMAS

White Christmas: What’s not to love? It’s funny, quotable, and full of good feels and sentiment. The costumes are amazing. The songs are classic. The actors are perfect for their roles. The setting at Columbia Inn is so cozy. I could go on and on.

Miracle On 34th Street: Is there a more classic Christmas movie than Miracle on 34th Street? I make sure to watch this one during the week of Thanksgiving, and it is a treasured part of my holiday traditions.

The Shop Around The Corner: Before How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days, before Legally Blonde, before When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail – before all those, there was The Shop Around The Corner. This is the essential romantic comedy.

WESTERNS

El Dorado: This is a movie “for people who like well-made, entertaining movies with suspense, violence, horses, colorful characters, lots of shooting and a few pretty girls.” via Roger Ebert

McLintock!: My favorite John Wayne movie. It’s classic Americana. John Wayne’s character embodies the spirit of the American dream – making something from nothing, standing up for the underdog, being a man and a gentleman, and having general disdain for government.

MUSICALS

State Fair: This is a classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical that I can watch over and over. It is one of my top five favorite movies of all time.

There’s No Business Like Show Business: This movie makes me laugh and it makes me cry! It’s a sweet story of a family’s love for each other throughout the changes and challenges of life.

ROMANTIC

Bringing Up Baby: A chaotic screwball comedy. This is a must-see for Cary Grant fans. “Cary Grant became Cary Grant in a series of screwball comedies opposite Katharine Hepburn, beginning with Howard Hawks’ Bringing Up Baby.” (via Reel Classics)

An Affair To Remember: “A relentlessly heart-tugging tale of two soulmates whose love even great tragedy cannot tear asunder…brought to us by two of the classiest acts in Hollywood history: Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.” (via the Guardian)

Casablanca: This is a classic old Hollywood love story. It has everything I want in a romantic movie – good times, heartache, beautiful music and iconic old Hollywood kissing scenes.

The Philadelphia Story: A love triangle (maybe even a love quadrangle) where romance meets comedy. This is Jimmy Stewart at his best, with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn finishing out a star studded trio.

Step back in time and enjoy a classic movie marathon!

  1. I’ve only seen Miracle on 34th Street from your list! I need to check out all these classics that I have been missing.

  2. Great list! One night our family was settling in to watch a movie. We’d gotten our kids on board with watching old movies but our youngest only liked the old comedy movies and not the old romantic movies. As we were discussing what we could watch he said, “I’m ok with an old movie as long as it’s not that ‘kielbasa’ movie!” It took us a few minutes to figure out he meant “Casablanca”. 😂

  3. Love all of these! Casablanca is my favorite. There’s something about black and white movies that are so comforting.
