It’s Such A Good Feeling…To Come Home

“When you come into your home, it should give you a certain feeling. You get to decide what that feeling is.”

How to create a place of comfort and safety in your home Come Home For Comfort

Although I can’t remember who I heard say that, the truth stuck with me. When people come into my home, what kind of feeling should it give them? I thought for a moment and came up with these words that describe what I desire for my home:

  • Safety
  • Acceptance
  • Love
  • Comfort
  • Order
  • Peace

Giving our homes a sense of comfort, order or love definitely requires action. In order to achieve the feeling I desire, I perform certain tasks:

  • Keep the living room and kitchen clean and free of clutter
  • Stock the fridge and pantry with my husband’s favorite foods
  • Light candles in the evening
  • Leave a lamp turned on by the door for late night entry
  • Play soft, comforting music
  • Prepare to have free time (even just a few minutes) when family or guests enter so I can give them my attention
  • Greet my husband at the door with a smile and a kiss!

What feeling do you want for those who enter your home? What feeling do you want when you walk through the door? I’d love to hear how you create those feelings for you and your family!

  1. I love the idea of having my home be cozy. It’s hard because we move so often that we don’t put a lot of time into “decorating” because it just adds to the stress when we move–but we do work in little touches here and there to make our house feel like a home. I’m so with you on the burning candles in the evenings. I usually light a few while I”m prepping dinner!! ❤

  2. One of the best compliments I’ve been given came from a friend visiting our apartment in Utah. She walked in and said, “Wow! Your place feels so warm and inviting. I just want to hang out here all day.” I want my home to always feel like that and be a place for people to gather. I think it can be done no matter how big or small your place is and I’ve always worked hard to achieve it. I want to ask my husband’s view on this and see what he’d like our house to be. Maybe we should come up with a little list together?? Good idea! Thanks for the Tuesday inspiration 🙂

  3. I love the idea of making a list and actively trying to implement things that create the feelings that you want. I will have to do this! I have had friends and visiting family tell me they feel comfortable and welcome in my home. I love that, but I haven’t thought about how to enhance that feeling for my family and guests and work toward also creating a calm and orderly feeling (despite a bajillion toys, crayons and stuffed animals, haha). Great thoughts!
