In the spirit of Valentines Day, I’m sharing a part of my love story with you! My first kiss happened on Valentines Day, and it was the kiss of true love.
During high school and college, my love life wasn’t very exciting. I only had one serious boyfriend in college but I can’t remember if we even held hands. LOL. Knowing that, it shouldn’t surprise you that I had my first kiss at the ripe old age of 25! I was pretty happy as a single person and while I knew I really wanted to be married in the near future, I wasn’t interested in settling for anything less than everything.
Back in college I decided that I would only say “I love you” to one person. That one lone college boyfriend told me he loved me, to which I replied, “thanks!” Hashtag awkward moment. My decision wasn’t a spiritual one, it was just something I wanted to do. I was pretty sure that when I was in love for keeps I would know. Along with that, I decided I only wanted to kiss the person I loved and always made it clear to anyone I dated that I had serious physical boundaries.

As it turns out, I was right about knowing when I’d met the one. When the charming and flirtatious Paul Curtis Pendell asked me out for coffee, I let him hold both of my hands the entire first date. I’m pretty sure he tried to kiss me on the 2nd or 3rd date…but I shut that down. Valentines Day was less than three weeks after our first date but by then I was completely head over heels for him! Paul took me to Zales and bought me a diamond band (that I now wear as part of my wedding set). We had supper at Outback and I told him then that I loved him (he’d already said it to me and had gotten my “thank you” response). 🙂 Paul knew my rule that loving and kissing went together and he didn’t waste any time getting that done!
My first kiss, on Valentines Day, was the kiss of true love.
I don’t hold it against anyone who has kissed people other than their life’s mate. My own beloved husband has certainly kissed quite a few besides me and that’s okay. 🙂 I will say that I never regretted my decision to save all my love for him!

I lol’d at your thank you response to being told I love you. I actually did the same thing to Kevin the first time he said I love you. I knew I loved him, but didn’t want to him to think I was just repeating what he said. Silly in retrospect and glad that he looked past my thank you and knew I really meant I love you, too. Glad you enjoyed your singlehood and didn’t rush the process of finding Mr. Right. You and Paul are perfect for each other 🙂

I am in that club with you Whitney!! I used to say Barbara Bush was the only person I knew who had only kissed one man…the one she married. They have a sweet love story as well. And you can still see the love between her and her George all these years later. It does take courage to make that decision but it is a wise one.
