Earlier this year we realized it was time to paint all the trim around the windows on our house. After some research and honestly assessing the quality of our work staining the deck, we decided it was in our best interest to have a professional tackle this project.
While we were at it we decided to update the color of our shutters and doors. Even though I never minded the original colors from when we bought the house, I decided that changing them would do a lot for the overall look of the house. I was right!
I had a few color ideas in mind, but I went to Pinterest and looked up “tan brick houses” to get some inspiration. Then I used the Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer to see how the colors would look in real life. This is SO much easier than standing in front of a wall of paint colors in the hardware store.
This feature only works in desktop mode, but here’s what it looks like:
See how close the final result turned out? I chose Benjamin Moore colors: Arctic Seal (CSP15) for the shutters and side doors, and Province Blue (2135-40) for the front door.
This was really the pin that sealed the deal for me – and I’m so happy with how it turned out on my own home!
This side door was previously white, and that’s one color I was glad to get rid of! It showed all the red clay and general outdoor grime. I think the gray will be much more forgiving.
I did bring home paint samples that I tried before confirming the colors with our contractor. They were a little pricey – about $12 each, but I have enough left over to use on other projects or to repaint the door in a couple years. It was definitely worth the money to make sure I would like the colors!
Here are my tips for choosing paint colors for your home exterior:
- Look up inspiration photos on Pinterest
- Try the Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer to nail down a few options
- Test the colors with paint samples (mine came from Ace Hardware)
- Evaluate whether you want to tackle it yourself or hire a professional
If you decide to go the DIY route, my friend Whitney has a really helpful post from her successful experience. Especially if you’re just painting your doors, I think it’s very feasible to do it yourself. Unless you’re me. 🙂

Me too, Annette! My Nana always says that if you choose colors you like, it will probably flow with things you already have. This works in clothing and in home decor! 🙂

I love the colours you picked! Small changes can make such a big impact. The previous owners of our house painted our front door pink, which sounds strange but works with the brick colour of our house.

Thanks, Anne Marie! I love the idea of a pink door. My mom has a salmony/coral front door and it is such a pretty pop of color!
