Trials, hard times and suffering are inevitable, but we don’t have to go through them without hope or help. Our pastor reminded us recently of the importance of knowing the promises of God’s Word. I wrote this down in my journal a few Sundays ago:
Knowing God’s Word not only helps us get through the dark times in life, it prepares us for them.
I shared last year how the promise of Proverbs 30:5 was helpful to me in a rough day at work, but what about those days that are really dark? I have several friends who have recently lost family members unexpectedly or who have received a grim cancer diagnosis for their young child. In times like that when you can’t think clearly enough to put a sentence together, the Holy Spirit will remind you of the promises you’ve hidden in your heart.
Here are my favorite verses for the hard times:
Psalm 91:1-2 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
Romans 5:8 God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Isaiah 43:1-3 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob,he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
2 Chronicles 20:15-17 Thus says the Lord to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s…You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed.
