Peace In My Heart, Peace In My Home

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…and be thankful.” Col. 3:15

The best way to have a cozy, peaceful home is to have a peaceful heart. I don’t know about you, but having a peaceful heart is something I have to really work on!

My heart is so easily distracted by discontentment. It is so often burdened as I see my loved ones and friends walking through difficult trials. It is so frequently turned away from God by my disobedience.

If you long for a peaceful heart and home, here are three things that I find so helpful as I pursue it for myself!

#1 Start your day in God’s Word

“A heart at peace gives life to the body.” Proverbs 14:30 Having a peaceful heart (and then a peaceful home) begins right here as I spend time in God’s Word. There is no substitute for the peace and wisdom of Scripture!

I struggle every day with worry, fear, anxiety, discontentment and everything else that’s the opposite of peace. Here’s what I find when I read God’s Word: “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”‭‭ Galatians‬ ‭1:3-5‬

#2 Be Obedient to God’s Word

When you are diligently listening to God’s Word, the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart as you read. Making the choice to obey the commands of Scripture will bring peace to your heart.

This peace is not dependent on your circumstances – it prevails in spite of them!

#3 Choose Gratitude

There is definitely merit in “counting your blessings” by looking at your circumstances and finding the good. I find, however, that the best way to choose gratitude is to look away from my circumstances and up to the One Who gives both blessing and trials.

One of my favorite songs is Counting Every Blessing by Rend Collective because it focuses on God’s hand in our lives from salvation through the trials we all face. I love the line in the chorus that says, “Surely every season You are good to me.”

Even if there doesn’t seem to be much good in your life right now, you can rejoice that God’s goodness pursues you, His heart is for you and that His mercies follow you all your days! (Psalm 23)

  1. I changed the way that my desk is organized so that my Bible and devotions are front and center. It’s a great reminder for me to start there in the mornings rather than my computer. That Counting Every Blessing song is such a good one! I could listen to it all day. I’ve even thought about some type of wall art with the lyrics on it. It’s that good 🙂

    1. That’s a great idea! What a practical way to really order your priorities. I’ve been thinking about using those lyrics in my decor, too. I think it’s too many words to fit on my chalkboard but I’m hoping to come up with something for November.

  2. Whitney, thank you for this encouragement! A godly mentor once said to me “Jesus is our peace” – I love remembering that when life or my heart isn’t peaceful….I need more of Him, always. Have a peace-filled day!
