My Hello Fresh Experience

As a frugal person who truly enjoys grocery shopping, meal subscription services weren’t really created for me. HOWEVER. As a person who loves to eat, having fresh, high quality groceries delivered to my doorstep is pretty exciting! For that reason, I’m always willing to use a free trial from whatever meal subscription service someone offers to me! 🙂

Last week we got to try Hello Fresh, thanks to a free meal credit that a friend shared with me. I filmed a quick unboxing and then shared part of the cooking experience with you. I’ll show you all three recipes and give you our thoughts on the dishes.

Here are three things I thought were worth mentioning:

  • Our favorite meal was the Shrimp Risotto. It was different than anything I normally make, but the flavors were so delicious and comforting. I will definitely make that one again!
  • There was plenty of food for two adults on the two-person plan. I made mac and cheese (from my pantry) to go with the burgers, but they would have been filling with just the broccoli.
  • I am very comfortable following a recipe and making more than one thing at a time, but I felt a little overwhelmed with the components of a few of the recipes. If you’re not an experienced cook, plan twice as much time as you think you’ll need to get everything ready.

Earlier this year we received a free trial of Blue Apron, and I have to say I prefer Hello Fresh so much more! If you’re curious as to how all the best meal delivery services really compare, check out this article from Reviews.com. They tested seven popular companies to find the best meal-delivery service — and three stood out as winners. Blue Apron, Hello Fresh and Plated each ranked at the top of their categories (Best Overall, Best for Novice Chefs and Best Recipes). If you haven’t tried one of those services, I’d recommend weighing the pros and cons before choosing to pay for one above another.

Have you tried Hello Fresh? What did you think of the experience?

  1. These look like such neat subscription boxes, but Justin is a picky eater so it wouldn’t do me any good to try them. That burger recipe sounds delicious.

    1. Paul is a SUPER picky eater – I was really surprised that he liked the shrimp dish. He asked me to make it again! I still had to adjust the recipes for Paul, he eats everything pretty plain – and never mixed together. 🙂

  2. Tasty meals! 🙂 I would love to taste the burger sauce with the jam…..fascinating! I tried Hello Fresh a few years ago, and I remember the meat quality being very good. Plus, there were tons of veggies (lots of food, but also lots of cutting/prep time). Great tip to use the bags as mini trash bins! I loved trying this service, but it’s not too realistic for me as a weekly thing. There was at least one recipe from my box that I’ve made again, so that was a big win! Glad you got some good meals out of this!

    1. The onion jam really made the difference. I was excited to try it because I had tomato jam with a burger at Disney World that was outstanding. It wasn’t quite as good as the Disney version, but that’s to be expected. 🙂

  3. I remembered you did not care for Blue Apron. Like you, I enjoy shopping for groceries. But I would maybe like a recipe service…just to try some new things. I often eat something at a restaurant or at a friends house and I think to my self, I would not have tried this recipe if I saw it in a cook book but it sure is good. I admit i am not too adventurous and with watching my calories, cooking just is not as fun.( Because I love CARBS)
